STOP THE WAR, SAVE THE ECONOMY!

The war is strangling our economy.   We can't afford:
  • Gas
  • Heating oil
  • Food
  • College tuition
  • Health insurance
  • Prescription drugs
  • Home ownership
  • Retirement
Bring the troops home.   Bring the money home.   Bring the jobs home, instead of spending $12 billion a month on the war.

ARE SOME PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES EDGING TOWARDS WAR WITH IRAN?

A U.S. attack on Iran would have disastrous consequences:

  • The U.S. government is already spending $10 billion a month on the Iraq war, over $225,000 per minute on the war.   Every minute of that war costs the equivalent of hiring seven new New Hampshire teachers for a year.   Can we afford the cost of an Iran war, too?

  • The U.S. military could be pushed to the point of collapse.   Already the Iraq war has left “U.S. military forces, especially our ground forces … stretched nearly to the breaking point,” according to the bipartisan Iraq Study Group.

  • U.S. aerial bombardment of Iran and its nuclear facilities could lead to substantial Iranian civilian casualties, causing more hatred of the U.S. in the Islamic world.

"RESIDUAL FORCES" IN IRAQ?

Many candidates who say they want to bring the troops home from Iraq actually favor leaving behind a “residual force” of U.S. troops there.   Here’s what the candidates say about leaving U.S. forces behind in Iraq.

Are they representing your views? If NO, tell them so.

If you oppose the Iraq war, and your views were not represented by a candidate, call and tell them to STOP VOTING FOR THE IRAQ WAR AND OCCUPATION.

A PATH TO PEACE IN IRAQ

There is no military solution to the problems in Iraq.   It is time to begin building peace, reconciliation and security in Iraq and the region.   We must convince our own national leadership that it is time to wage peace, instead of waging war.

A number of plans involving the withdrawal of U.S. troops and/or diplomatic means to reconcile the warring factions in Iraq have been proposed.   Important elements of these plans could be assembled into a path to peace for Iraq, and for the United States and the wider Middle East.

TEN REASONS TO WITHDRAW FROM IRAQ NOW!

  1. The U.S. troop presence is not calming the violence in Iraq.
  2. Most of the attacks in Iraq are against the U.S.-led coalition, not against Iraqi civilians.
  3. Most Iraqis want us to leave.
  4. The U.S. troop presence is fueling the growth of terrorism.
  5. U.S. troops are being killed and wounded in an unnecessary war.
  6. Thousands of Iraqi civilians are being killed or wounded by U.S. military action.
  7. Hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars are being wasted.
  8. U.S. national security is being jeopardized by the continued war.
  9. The Iraq war is destroying good will towards America around the world.
  10. There are multiple proposals for peace that do not involve continued U.S. military occupation of Iraq.

A WAR FOR OIL

The U.S. has a long history of military and covert interventions in the Persian Gulf region to try to control the region’s oil.   Strong circumstantial evidence suggests that the 2003 U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq is part of that bloody history, launched, in large part, to control the oil fields of the Persian Gulf.
  • Before the U.S. invasion, it was oil.
  • During the U.S. invasion, it was oil.
  • After the U.S. invasion, it was oil.

We need to elect government leaders who will aggressively develop alternative energy and pursue diplomacy, not wars for oil.

PROPOSALS FOR PEACE AND RECONCILIATION IN IRAQ

In June, 2006, the new Prime Minister of Iraq, Nuri al Maliki, proposed a plan for national reconciliation in Iraq.   Unfortunately, the U.S. military occupation is greatly complicating the peaceful resolution of differences between Iraqis.

THE U.S. PLAN TO STAY IN IRAQ "INDEFINITELY"

Unknown to most Americans, the administration has been quietly laying the groundwork for a long-term U.S. military presence in Iraq.

  • U.S. military to be in Iraq “more or less indefinitely”
  • Building up U.S. military facilities in Iraq “for the longer-term”
  • Building up “permanent communications infrastructure” in Iraq

AN URGENT REQUEST FOR YOU TO TELL CONGRESS WHY THEY SHOULD VOTE AGAINST SUPPLEMENTAL FUNDING FOR THE IRAQ WAR.

March 18, 2007: The Democratic leadership’s plan to effectively allow U.S. military deployment in Iraq for at least another year and a half will:
  • undermine U.S. national security
  • add significantly to the number of U.S. and Iraqi dead and wounded, without resolving the violence there
  • constitute an unforgivable misappropriation and waste of nearly $100 billion of public funds
  • undermine popular support for the Democratic Party and weaken the prospects for expanded Democratic victories in 2008, including prospects for capturing the White House.

The House of Representatives may vote by mid-week; the Senate next week.   Please call or write your representative and your senators NOW.

The Bush Administration Economic Policy

Can be Summed Up in Two Words

JOB LOSS

  • NEW HAMPSHIRE: The state has been hammered by the loss of manufacturing jobs since Bush took over the White House.
  • NATIONALLY: President Bush has amassed the worst record of job loss since the time of the Great Depression.
  • GLOBAL OUTSOURCING: Since Bush took office, there has been a flight of well paying information and high tech jobs to cheap labor overseas.
